By 1929, the Jaguar engine, introduced in 1923, was underpowered compared to the competition. To address this situation, the engine's bore was increased to 5.25 inches, which raised the displacement to 273 litres. The prototype was known as the Jaguar Major, whilst all production units were renamed the Panther.
The variants of the Panther were available as geared or ungeared units, with aspiration ranging from a plain fan through to fully supercharged.
